Data Sources & Methodology

Every research figure on this site is read from one dataset, rebuilt from Scopus, SciVal and the Office of Research's own register. Nothing is typed into a page. This page explains where each figure comes from and what it counts.

Where the figures come from

Three sources feed every chart, table and figure in the Research section.

Scopus

Every document carrying the University's affiliation, each faculty member's author record, and the standing of every journal published in.

SciVal

Citation impact, percentiles, collaboration and research topics, measured against the world's publications of the same year and field.

Office of Research

Projects, grants, student publications and agreements — figures no bibliometric database holds — from the Office's own register.

What each measure counts

Open a measure to see how it is counted and where it comes from.

Number of Scopus-indexed documents carrying the University's affiliation, counted by the document's cover date (calendar year) or by academic year, September to August.

Source: Scopus

Citations received by the University's publications divided by the citations expected for publications of the same year, document type and subject area worldwide. 1.00 is the world average.

Source: SciVal

Citations received to date by the publications of each year, and that total divided by the number of publications. Recent years keep accruing.

Source: SciVal

Share of each year's publications among the 10 % (or 1 %) most-cited publications in the world for their year, type and field.

Source: SciVal

Share of each year's publications in journals ranked in the top 1 %, 10 %, 25 % or 50 % of their field by CiteScore. The top 50 % corresponds to quartiles 1 and 2.

Source: SciVal

Each document placed by its journal's best CiteScore percentile across the journal's subject areas in the publication year; books, conference series and sources without an ISSN are "not ranked".

Source: Scopus

From the affiliations on each paper: international (at least one co-author outside the UAE), national (another UAE institution), institutional (University authors alone) and single-authored. Academic–corporate collaboration counts a co-author from industry.

Source: SciVal / Scopus

The All Science Journal Classification (ASJC) areas of the journal a document appears in; a document counts once in every area of its journal.

Source: Scopus

SciVal clusters the world's publications into research topics by citation links; prominence combines a topic's recent citations, views and CiteScore into a percentile.

Source: SciVal

Each person's own Scopus author record — documents, citations and h-index across their whole career, including work at previous institutions. The roster is every faculty member whose profile carries a Scopus author id.

Source: Scopus author records

University-affiliated documents written by members of a college's roster, each document counted once per college however many members co-wrote it.

What is not published here, and why

The University's own sum of Scopus cited-by countsElsevier's terms allow cited-by counts to be aggregated for internal analysis but not for external display; the citation figures published here are SciVal's.
Peer-institution benchmarksComparisons with other UAE universities are kept on the staff dashboard for the Office of Research and management.
Six illustrative news itemsThe research news page leads to the University's real research news, events and achievements in the central newsroom; the six illustrative items the news format was designed around are held in the register only.

Recommended sequence

Phase 1 · Weeks 0–6

Correct and consolidate

Rewrite the VP message, rebuild the org chart as markup, un-gate the Research Manual, publish committee calendars and turnaround targets, fix the TMRC and interdisciplinary page defects, redesign the hub around existing metrics.

Requires no new content from faculty.

Phase 2 · Weeks 6–18

Build the missing layers

Define and publish the themes, build the expert finder and supervisor view, build the funding section, rebuild TMRC to the CARF standard, publish the integrity policies, connect research to admissions, start the news stream.

Depends on the content collection above.

Phase 3 · Weeks 18–32

Evidence and automation

Full dashboard with breakdowns, export and methodology note; impact case studies; theses repository; partnerships section; Arabic translation; evaluate a research information system; automate the metrics refresh.

Turns the site from static to self-sustaining.

Institutional output and faculty career records

An earlier draft of the research portal led with the career totals of faculty Scopus author records. Those are career totals for the people currently employed, including work published at previous institutions — they are not institutional output, and presenting them as such is exactly the claim an accreditation reviewer or ranking analyst is trained to test. The Academic Board figures are affiliation-scoped and resolve this: the site leads with the University's own publications and reports faculty career standing separately and clearly labelled. Both are legitimate; each supports a different argument, and they are no longer conflated.

Attribution. Data source: Scopus (www.scopus.com). Data source: SciVal (www.scival.com). Scopus and SciVal are products of Elsevier.

Identifiers: Scopus affiliation ID 60113249; SciVal institution ID 710468. The University's own publication lists, curated by each college, are under Research Publications.
