Impact Case Studies

Six studies showing what changed as a result of the research — in practice, in policy and in patient care. Publication counts demonstrate activity; impact narratives demonstrate consequence, and ranking and accreditation bodies increasingly weight the latter.

Pharmacist-led deprescribing reduces unnecessary long-term acid suppression Clinical Pharmacy, Medication Safety & DeprescribingSDG 3

The problem

Long-term proton pump inhibitor use without a continuing indication is widespread in the region and is associated with avoidable adverse outcomes and cost.

The research

A pharmacist-led randomised controlled trial tested a structured deprescribing protocol against usual care in outpatients on long-term therapy.

The findings

The intervention arm showed a substantially higher rate of appropriate discontinuation at six months with no increase in symptom recurrence requiring re-initiation.

The impact

The protocol has been adopted into local outpatient pharmacy workflow and forms the basis of a regional stewardship guideline submission.

Targeting RAN GTPase opens a new route in treatment-resistant breast cancer Cancer Biology & Targeted TherapeuticsSDG 3SDG 9

The problem

Triple-negative breast cancer has limited targeted treatment options and poor outcomes once metastatic.

The research

Sustained laboratory work characterised RAN GTPase as a driver of metastatic behaviour and tested small-molecule and delivery-based approaches to inhibit it.

The findings

Inhibition reduced invasive capacity in cell and rodent models, with a defined therapeutic window identified.

The impact

The work underpins an active international collaboration and has attracted doctoral candidates to the University specifically for this programme.

Non-invasive cardiovascular phenotyping brings preclinical capability to the Northern Emirates Cardiometabolic & Endocrine HealthSDG 3SDG 9

The problem

Preclinical cardiovascular research in the region has depended on sending studies abroad, adding cost and delay.

The research

CARF established non-invasive ECG and blood pressure systems alongside ex vivo working heart perfusion, under full ethical and regulatory licensing.

The findings

The facility now supports reproducible cardiovascular disease modelling across multiple disease areas without terminal endpoints for monitoring.

The impact

External academic and industry users now access the facility under contract research and collaborative models, retaining regional research spend.

Simulation-based interprofessional training changes team behaviour in acute care Nursing, Health Workforce & Community HealthSDG 3SDG 4

The problem

Communication failure between professions is a leading contributor to preventable patient harm.

The research

Structured interprofessional simulation scenarios were delivered through SIDC to mixed medicine, nursing, pharmacy and dentistry cohorts.

The findings

Measured improvements in team communication and escalation behaviour were sustained at follow-up.

The impact

The model is embedded in curricula across all four colleges and is being offered to regional healthcare employers as continuing professional development.

Host-modulation therapy improves outcomes in chronic periodontitis Oral Health & Restorative SciencesSDG 3

The problem

Conventional mechanical therapy alone leaves a substantial proportion of patients with residual disease.

The research

A programme of clinical studies evaluated adjunctive host-modulation agents alongside standard periodontal treatment.

The findings

Adjunctive therapy produced measurable additional improvement in clinical attachment in defined patient subgroups.

The impact

Findings inform regional periodontal treatment protocols and have been incorporated into postgraduate dental teaching.

Molecular surveillance strengthens antimicrobial stewardship in the Northern Emirates Infection, Microbiome & Antimicrobial ResistanceSDG 3

The problem

Resistance patterns in the region were poorly characterised, limiting the precision of empirical prescribing guidance.

The research

TMRC established molecular characterisation of resistant isolates in partnership with regional diagnostic laboratories.

The findings

Distinct local resistance profiles were identified that differ from those assumed by imported guidelines.

The impact

Findings feed into local empirical prescribing guidance and national AMR surveillance reporting.

How each case study is told

Each case study follows the same structure — the problem, the research, the findings, the impact and what happens next — at roughly 600 words. A consistent structure keeps them comparable and keeps authors disciplined. SDG tagging additionally supplies structured evidence for impact-focused ranking submissions.

  1. The problem

The health or education question the work set out to address.

  2. The research

    What was studied, and how.

  3. The findings

    What the work showed.

  4. The impact

What changed in practice, policy or patient care.

  5. The goals

The UN Sustainable Development Goals the work serves.
