Program Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BSM) is a four-year program offered at RAK College of Nursing (RAKCON), RAK Medical and Health Sciences University, Ras Al Khaimah. The curriculum consists of 120 credit hours distributed across general education (21 credit hours) and college requirements (99 credit hours), including 30 clinical credit hours (1,800 clinical hours).
RAK College of Nursing has been at the forefront of nursing education since establishing its Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program in 2006. It has since expanded with an RN-to-BSN pathway, Master of Science in Nursing specializations, a Bachelor and Master of Science in Midwifery, and Post Graduate Diploma programs. All of RAKCON’s programs are re-accredited by MOHESR, and its graduates are recognized for their contributions to healthcare leadership across the UAE.

This course aims to enable the students to have a better understanding of the Arabic language to communicate with patients and hospital staff in their profession.
HBC 113 Human Biochemistry (2-1-0=3)
Prerequisites: None
This is a system-based introductory biochemistry course dealing with the basic concepts of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and enzymes and the functioning of musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, blood, respiratory, cardiovascular, excretory, and endocrine systems. The students are also exposed to the fundamental aspects of molecular biology and its relation to the causes of common diseases.
ENG 101 English (3-0-0=3)

This course teaches the health sciences students to develop writing skills to generate and express their ideas clearly, correctly, and effectively. It covers college-level writing standards, reading for comprehension purposes, prewriting techniques, and organization of material and to express themselves in speech. Students will be able to write fluent and logical compositions from small paragraphs to multi-paragraph essays for various purposes in the medical/ nursing context. They will also be familiarized with basic medical/nursing terminology.

This course is a study of the normal anatomy of the human body through lectures, demonstration visuals, and hands-on laboratory experience. It will provide the student with a basis for clinical nursing practice.
MPH 103 Physiology (2-1-0=3)
Prerequisites: Co- MAN103
The physiology of the body systems will be explored, including reproduction, homeostasis, and fluid balance. Learned through lectures, demonstrations, visuals, and hands-on laboratory experience.
MAP 102 Anatomy and Physiology of Reproductive System (1-1-0= 2)

This course provides a detailed exploration of male and female reproductive anatomy and physiology, unraveling the intricacies of human reproductive systems. ENG 201 Health Sciences Communication in English (2-0-0=2)

The Health Sciences Communication Course covers the soft skills required for the medical/ nursing professional to interact with patients and their families. At every level it emphasizes Empathy and Active Listening Skills while interacting with patients, their families as well as their colleagues. Students are exposed to techniques of communicating in different contexts. Public Speaking skills including conference presentations are practiced.
MWR 202 Women's Reproductive Health and Wellbeing (2-0-0=2)

This course will focus on the provision of women-centered care across the lifespan. Students will explore and gain an understanding of the issues of women's health and well-being, including sexual health, teenage pregnancy, gynecology and breast disorders, and menopause. Students will learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of anxiety and common mental health disorders that are pre-existing and those that may develop or be exacerbated during the childbirth continuum.

This course on health informatics and artificial intelligence provides an opportunity to integrate knowledge and skills of computer science, Healthcare science, information science, and cognitive science in midwifery practice to improve healthcare outcomes. This course focuses on developing an understanding of concepts relevant to health informatics and skills in midwifery practice and the concepts of data protection, privacy, and security via using of electronic health records.

MHA 303 Health Assessment (2-1-0=3)
Prerequisites: MAN 103 & MPH 103
This course prepares the student to conduct a comprehensive health assessment of adult patients. Students will have developed the confidence and competence necessary to conduct comprehensive health assessments that contribute to improved patient outcomes and holistic nursing practice.
MHM 302 Health Assessment for Midwifery (1-1-0=2)
Prerequisites: MHA 303
This course aims to provide a theoretical foundation for health assessment, physical examination, diagnostic procedures, and clinical experience to implement knowledge in practice. It introduces various methods and techniques of interviewing, history-taking, physical examination, and standard and vital symptoms. The course also highlights applying diagnostic procedures and critical thinking skills for data analysis to identify midwifery and collaborative problems.
MCP 303 Cultural Perspective in Midwifery (3-0-0=3)

This course is designed to enable students to examine issues related to maternity services for childbearing women and neonates at an international and local level using social determinants of health and human rights perspectives. The course also examines factors regarding the social construction of motherhood and parenthood, the effect of media, and implications for midwifery practice.
MFM 303 Fundamental skills for midwifery practice (1-1-0=2)
Prerequisites: Co MIM 303
This course equips students with a foundation level of knowledge so they are able to provide safe, effective, and holistic care to women/families. The course covers the definition, roles, and responsibilities, legislation and ethical midwifery practice, and the role of the midwife in normal childbirth and models of midwifery care as well as a range of communication and interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships with the wider maternity team. This will be situated in the context of professional regulation and the Nursing and Midwifery Council Scope of Practice (UAE not approved).
MTC 302 Therapeutic Communication Skills (2-0-0=2)

This course is designed to provide students with foundational knowledge and practical skills in therapeutic communication. Through a combination of theoretical concepts, interactive activities, and practical exercises, students will develop the ability to effectively communicate with individuals in various therapeutic settings. Emphasis will be placed on building rapport, active listening, empathy, and nonverbal communication techniques. Moreover, this course focuses on the application of therapeutic communication skills when providing holistic care for clients and their families.

This course deals with a variety of adult clients including geriatrics with specific medical and surgical conditions, communicable diseases, and instructional therapeutic nutrition with special emphasis on the problem-solving approach of comprehensive patient care which includes diet therapy and health education.

This course deals with a variety of patients including geriatrics with specific medical and surgical conditions, communicable diseases, therapeutic nutrition with special emphasis on problem-solving approach to comprehensive patient care including diet therapy and health education.
MNPT 403 Normal Pregnancy and Fetal Development Theory (3-0-0=3)
Prerequisites: MHA 303, MFM 304 & Co- MNPC403
This course explores the biology and physiology of reproduction and pregnancy, encompassing how sperm and eggs are made; the events that result in fertilization and conception; and how a baby develops and is born. The course will focus only on mammals with an emphasis on humans, so students to understand the physiological, psychological & psychosocial changes that occur during normal pregnancy. It will explore the student's understanding of the menstrual cycle, anatomy, and physiology of the reproductive system, conception, maternal physiological & psychosocial adaptations to pregnancy, common symptoms, and minor disorders of pregnancy.
MNPC 403 Normal Pregnancy and Fetal Development Clinical (0-1-2=3)
Prerequisites: MHM 302 & MFM 304 & Co- MNPT 403
This course initiates the student's skills in relation to the UAE NMC Scope of Practice for Midwives: Competency Standards (2013) and the ICM Competencies. and enables the student to have practical simulation and clinical practice in the provision of antenatal care and in detecting deviation during pregnancy. To introduce students to the essential core skills and competencies required to commence midwifery practice and provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate foundation clinical midwifery skills. Emphasis is placed on students internalizing and demonstrating safe care.
MICT 402 Intrapartum Care Theory (2-0-0=2)
Prerequisites: Co- MNPT 403, Co- MICC 403
This course develops students' knowledge and understanding of the physiological, psychological, and psychosocial changes that occur during childbirth and the midwifery role in providing evidence-based woman-centered care. The foci include the signs and symptoms of the onset of labor, 1st stage of labor (maternal & fetal monitoring, assessing progress and pain management), 2nd stage of labor (mechanisms/processes of birth), and 3rd and 4th stages of labor. Furthermore, it included the role of the midwife in providing women with evidence-based care and facilitating informed choices.
MICC 403 Intrapartum Care Clinical (0-0-3=3)
Prerequisites: Co- MNPC 403 & Co- MICT 402
The clinical aspect of this course will be geared towards the care and management of normal labor, and birth; students will develop skills and attitudes needed to deal with the health status of mothers and babies during the intrapartum period. Clinical competency will be developed, practiced, and assessed in simulated and clinical environments. This course aims to introduce the student to the midwifery roles and practice related to normal childbirth including, pre-conception, antenatal, and intrapartum, care of the woman.
MPNT 503 Post Natal and Newborn Care Theory (2-1-0=3)
Prerequisites: MICT 403
This course focuses on the development of midwifery students in providing care to the Newborns and Infants. Simulated clinical experiences will be provided to the student to demonstrate competence in caring for newborns and infants. It will highlight the importance of developing knowledge in working with newborns and infants in a variety of healthcare settings within a multidisciplinary team environment.
MPNC 502 Post Natal and Newborn Care Clinical (0-0-2=2)
Prerequisites: MICC 402
Postnatal and Newborn Care is a comprehensive course designed to equip nursing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide evidence-based care to mothers and newborns during the postpartum period and in the early stages of infancy. The course emphasizes a holistic approach to Maternal and newborn well-being, focusing on assessment, intervention, and support to promote optimal health outcomes for both mother and baby.
MMI 503 Maternal and Infant's Nutrition (2-0-0-=2)
Prerequisites: MPH 103
A foundation course in nutrition to provide the students a perspective on some of the links between diet, health, and disease. Food needs for energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals are considered in relation to the maintenance of wellness. Nutrition assessments for women during antenatal, natal, and postnatal periods will be discussed. This course will highlight the importance of infant nutrition and more emphasis on the exclusive breastfeeding and diet interventions for healthy and disease states will be considered.
MAO 502 Anaesthesiology and Operative Care in Midwifery (2-1-0=3)
Prerequisites: CO- MLPT 503 & MLPC 504
This course focuses on the fundamentals of various types of anesthesia procedures in midwifery practice and the application of the midwifery process in caring for women during childbirth, including the role of the midwife in providing women/families with evidence-based information to support informed choices. Students will learn how to care for women pre/post-operatively, mental, emotional, and physical preparation and recovery in scheduled/unscheduled care. Students focus on assessment tools to recognize the deteriorating woman and gain an understanding of their role in the initial management, referral, and ongoing care within the maternity team.
MMCT 503 Midwifery Care of High Risks Maternity Theory (3-0-0=3)
Prerequisites: MNPT 403 & Co. MMCC 504
The clinical aspect of midwifery 3 (High risk) will be geared towards the care and management of high-risk mothers during pregnancy, students will develop skills and attitudes needed to deal with the health status of mothers and babies during these critical stages.
MMCC 504 Midwifery Care of High Risks Maternity Clinical (0-1-3=4)
Prerequisites: MNPC 403 & C-. MMCT 503
This course will develop student midwife's knowledge and understanding of the effect of physiological and psychological (co)morbidities on fertility/pregnancy. This course will educate students about pathophysiology during pregnancy including, maternal/ fetal complications of pregnancy and pregnancy loss. Students will be taught the process of robust risk assessment, making timely/ appropriate referrals, and initiating management of complications, including maternal emergencies, to optimize outcomes.
MHR 604 High-risk Neonate and Infant Care (3-0-1=4)
Prerequisites: MNI 403
This course is designed to develop competency among midwifery students in providing care to high-risk neonates. Clinical and simulated opportunities will be provided to the students to develop their skills in managing the care of neonates with acute and chronic healthcare issues.

The Emirates Society course seeks to consolidate national belonging and identity to appreciate the national achievements of the United Arab Emirates. The course focuses on introducing students to the main social features of the Emirati community and its core values and heritage, as well as the history and geography of the country.
MCHT 603 Community Health and Midwife Theory (3-0-0=3)

The course will examine wider determinants of health and the role of the midwife in changing social, physical, cultural, and economic climates and health behaviors. Students will analyze public health issues such as immigration, smoking, obesity, STDs, drug/alcohol addiction, domestic violence, cultural safety, community development, empowerment, and child protection and their impact on health. Exploring the Importance of breastfeeding on the health and well-being of women/families. Policies, evidence-based practice, and risk assessments about public health interventions, protection of the vulnerable, and maternity care provision.
MCHC 603 Community Health and Midwife Clinical (0-0-3=3)
Prerequisites: MMC C 504 & Co- MCHT 603
The course is intended to plan and provide an evidence-based educational and rehabilitation program for the woman in accordance with the Midwifery Management, the international Classification Functions, and evaluation scales. The concept of community and the role of community midwife. The population screenings (PAP test, HPV test, breast self-examination). The cultural determinants of gender health and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. The midwifery counseling in the family planning program. The role and the midwifery skills in reducing the adverse reproductive outcome (EAR), in the parenthood educational programs, and emotional, reproductive, and sexual health programs. The Midwifery counseling during menopause. Organizational models of the community health services.

Prerequisites: None
This course explores organizational strategies, leadership theories, and societal trends with implications for decision-making in health care. Introduction to management skills needed by professional nurses with clinical application in diverse settings is also provided.
MRB 703 Research Methodology and Biostatistics (3-0-0=3)

This course is designed to assist the students in acquiring an understanding of the research methodology and statistics and its nursing application. It will further enable the students to critique research studies and recognize the value of utilizing evidence-based nursing practice to improve the quality of care for mothers, neonates, and community.
ICM 101 Islamic Culture and Medicine (2-0-0=2)

The course Islamic Culture and Medicine introduces the concept of medicine in the Islamic belief system. The course covers the pillars of the Islamic faith and the ethical and moral issues related to nursing, Nurse rights and duties, abortion, Cosmo surgery, cloning, test-tube babies and plastic surgeries, and such other issues.
MCC 716 Consolidated Clinical Practicum 1 (0-0-6=6)
Prerequisites: MMCC 504
This course is the final practice-based course in the Bachelor of Midwifery program before students graduate and are eligible for registration as midwives. The aim is to enable the student to consolidate their knowledge and skills in both theory and clinical practice. This will give them confidence and competence and prepare them for their role as registered professional midwives. To establish the student's graduate attributes, employability, and eligibility for licensure as a Registered Midwife, they will be required to pass a clinically focused exit exam at the end of this placement.
MLE 802 Legal and Ethical Issues in Midwifery (2-0-0=2)

MCC 826 Consolidated Clinical Practicum 2 (0-0-6=6)
Prerequisites: MMC 716
This course is the final practice-based course in the Bachelor of Midwifery program before students graduate and are eligible for registration as a midwife. The aim is to enable the student to consolidate their knowledge and skills in both theory and clinical practice. This will give them confidence and competence and prepare them for their role as registered professional midwives. To establish the student's graduate attributes, employability, and eligibility for licensure as a Registered Midwife, they will be required to pass a clinically focused exit exam at the end of this placement.
MRP 802 Research Project for Midwifery (2-0-0=2)
Prerequisites: MRB 703
This course provides students with an opportunity to perform a research project relevant to their midwifery studies in their field of interest to contribute to the midwifery profession and practice, utilizing the research proposal developed in the prerequisite course to produce an extensive literature review, select an appropriate methodology, collect and analyze data and present conclusion as a final research proposal under academic supervision.

Additional Requirements
- English Subject: Applicants who do not meet the English subject requirements will be required to pass a remedial course for the specified subject. For other curriculum, if the medium of instruction is English, a letter from the school is required.
- Personal Interview: All applicants must pass a personal interview conducted by the College, in addition to meeting other admission conditions.
- Priority Admission: High preference will be given to students with high scores in overall aggregate in grade 12.
Admission Procedure (BDS, B.Pharm, BSN & BSM Programs)
a. The following steps will be followed for admissions (BDS, B.Pharm, BSN & BSM Programs) to the program for Aug 2026 session:
1. From the online applications received, after evaluating the 12th grade marks as per the Admission requirement, students will be shortlisted based on the marks of 12th grade submission. A provisional offer letter will be issued to the student asking to remit the seat reservation fee to block the seat for the programs. Once the student paid the seat reservation fee, based on the documents submission through online form, the student are required as mentioned in the additional requirements.
2. The Personal Interview which is a must for All the students, the interview will be conducted virtually through google meet or Zoom software. Admissions Committee consisting of Dean of respective College & a panel of one or two Senior Faculty and Manager - Admissions & Marketing.
3. Grade 12 results are declared for various Boards of study in UAE at different timings in 3 phases-starting end of May, mid of June and first week of July. Therefore, interviews will be conducted from June onwards every week until seats are full.
- The admission will be based on the MOE Guidelines.
- Candidates who are selected for admission after the Personal Interview will receive the Provisional Offer letter by email from the University within 2 days with a timeline for acceptance and confirmation by payment of the balance fees. If the candidate is accepting the offer of admission, he/she must comply with all the requirements specified in the Provisional Offer Letter including submission of required documents and payment of fee on or before the stipulated date mentioned in the Provisional Offer Letter. If the candidate does not respond within the deadline mentioned, the provisional offer automatically expires and the seat is allotted to the next candidate in the waiting list.
- On compliance of the above including payment of requisite fee, the candidate will receive a registered student ID number on email and due intimation from the University regarding further details on the Freshman Orientation Program.
- Applicants should strictly adhere to the deadlines indicated for admission, submit online applications on time and upload important document copies mentioned such as grade sheets/transcripts etc and ensure application is fully completed before they click the submit button.
- Once the seats are full, the remaining candidates who have qualified after personal interview will be waitlisted.
- Waitlisted applicants and late applicants can be considered for admission if seats are still available for that program, within registration deadlines.
- Admission of students are subject to the compliance of all requirements specified in the Provisional/Admission Offer Letter.
- All the documents submitted online by the candidates will be verified with the originals submitted by the candidates during admission and duly returned after verification as per MOHESR Standards.
- In case of non-compliance with any of the admission criteria/ false documentation submitted, the admission of the candidate will automatically stand cancelled.
- The original documents to be submitted for verification by the candidate for verification are mentioned in the Provisional/Admissions offer.
Note the following points:
- Students with 12th grade marksheet/grades more than 2 years old will not be given priority for admission.
- The University reserves the right to refuse admission to any candidate without assigning any reason.
- The decision of the Admission Committee in the matters of admission is final.
- The jurisdiction in respect of all legal matters in admission related matters will be at Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
Attestations & Equivalency Certificate mandatory prior to Admission:
- Prior to admission, all students who studied foreign curriculum in UAE must produce the Equivalency Certificate from the Ministry of Education of the emirate in which studied. To obtain the same, students should visit the Ministry of Education and submit their Arabic and Islamic results for the grades 10, 11 and 12(For Muslims).
- For students who studied foreign curriculum in UAE, attestation (official seal & stamp) of certificates grade 10 onwards until grade 12 by Ministry of Education is also mandatory. Students who studied foreign curriculum outside UAE, must obtain attestation (official seal & stamp) of school grade sheets, 10th grade upwards until 12th by Ministry of Education in the country of study and UAE consulate in that country.
