Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Program

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program comprises of 2 years of pre-clerkship (integrated modular applied basic sciences) courses and 3 years of clinical clerkship courses.

1. The Goals

The curriculum has been developed to provide learning opportunities enabling medical students to acquire fundamental knowledge develop basic skills and appreciate principles relevant to health care in the context of the community. The five-year curriculum has been designed to achieve the following goals:

  1. To provide a comprehensive medical education leading to MBBS degree.
  2. To prepare for evidence based medical practice in the changing health care environment.
  3. To follow outcome based approach to medical courses and prepare the student to achieve the competencies in Medical knowledge, Clinical skills, Evidence-based learning, Patient care, Effective communication skills & Professionalism.
  4. To develop a compassionate, analytical and ethical approach in the delivery of health care to the community.
  5. To prepare physicians to function effectively in the social health care system.
  6. Promote growth of research and activity targeting areas of national concern.
  7. Develop skills that facilitate development of effective and empathetic relationships with patients and their families and effective collaborations with other health care professionals.

2. Program Outcomes

a. Knowledge
Upon completion of the program, the students will be able to:

  1. Recognize and explain the scientific, including molecular basis of normal health and disease conditions affecting the human body.
  2. Integrate the basic sciences knowledge to the clinical context in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the human systems.
  3. Analyze the human psychosocial behavior in relation to health disorders in clinical decision making.
  4. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the global healthcare delivery in the community according to the health needs.
  5. Assess the strategies to support lifelong learning and apply the same to make professional decisions.

b. Skills
Upon completion of the program, the students will be able to:

  1. Elicit accurate and focused medical histories of patients and perform relevant, comprehensive physical examination.
  2. Evaluate the use of laboratory tests and imaging studies and interpret the results to arrive at clinical decision making.
  3. Perform the common medical and surgical techniques in clinical settings including the ‘basic life support’.
  4. Formulate and implement plans for the prevention and treatment of diseases and refer patients to experts,if needed.

Aspects of Competence (Autonomy and Responsibility)
The students will be able to:

  1. Display the attributes of sincerity, honesty and integrity while dealing with patients, community and medical profession.
  2. Analyze the scientific basis of the modalities available and apply them in clinical decision making process in patient care.
  3. Educate and motivate the patient to promote healthy habits for wellness and prevention of disorders.
  4. Recognize and value collaboration among health care disciplines, between the physician and patient and their family, and among community and governmental organizations, and industry for achievement of optimal care for patients.

Role in Context
The students will be able to:

  1. Communicate effectively and compassionately with the patients, colleagues and paramedical staff involved in health care management.
  2. Demonstrate professionalism and high ethical standards in all aspects of medical practice.
  3. Organize a healthcare team and take responsibility for the team performance in healthcare settings.

The students will be able to:

  1. Exhibit a capacity for self-evaluation and motivation for lifelong learning in medical practice.
  2. Remain updated with advancements of medical sciences and apply new knowledge and skills in the patient care.
  3. Take active part in all national and international health care programs to keep the community in good health.

c. Attitudes & Behaviors
The Students shall be able to:

  1. Display the personal attributes of compassion, honesty, professionalism and integrity in relationships with patients, families, communities and the medical profession.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to communicate compassionately and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with patients, their families, colleagues and others with whom physicians must exchange information in carrying out their responsibilities.
  3. Exhibit appropriate value for the sensitive nature of the doctor/patient relationship and the importance of compassionate communication and active listening, with attention to the patient’s familial, cultural, and spiritual circumstances.
  4. Demonstrate professionalism and high ethical standards in all aspects of medical practice, specifically competence, honesty, integrity, compassion, respect for others, professional responsibility and social responsibility.
  5. Exhibit a capacity for self-evaluation, moral reflection and ethical reasoning to form the basis for a self-directed, lifelong engagement in the responsible, committed, compassionate practice of medicine.
