Recent Innovation in Research

The webinar discussed: The recent field of medical biotechnology has seen remarkable advancements. One such area of interest is the role of extracellular vesicles in maintaining mitochondrial quality control mechanisms. The vesicles, which are released by cells into the extracellular environment, have been found to play a significant role in intercellular communication and in maintaining cellular homeostasis. By transferring functional mitochondria and degrading damaged ones, extracellular vesicles can regulate mitochondrial quality control mechanisms. This session discussed the significant implications for the treatment of various diseases that are linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, such as neurodegenerative disorders and cancer. Therefore, further research in this area can pave the way for the development of novel therapeutic strategies.

Workshop on Stereology

New methods have been developed in line with technological developments to examine the three-dimensional (3D) structures of biological systems accurately and reliably using two-dimensional (2D) images. Quantitative methods have been applied in many methodological approaches by taking advantage of biological structures' shape and size characteristics. The most critical point of stereological techniques from other quantitative methods is that they are based on the systematic random sampling rule that allows for examining the entire biological structure in equal probability. These methods can be applied to 2D histological sections and images obtained from different types of imaging, such as magnetic resonance, computer tomography and x-ray images. Stereological methods help us obtain information about the biological structure, such as volume, surface area, length, and number of particles, i.e. synapse, mitochondria, cells, and glomerulus.

In applying design-based stereological methods, sampling biological structures at equal distance intervals and calculating the data analyzed from parallel and equidistant parts of the tissue that represent the whole of the tissue provides accurate data on the tissue. Detecting pathological conditions in quantitative data is obtained using these techniques. The stereology offers different approaches for each organ, tissue, and tissue component. The stereological techniques estimate the diameter and length of capillaries, measure axonal diameter and myelin sheath thickness or provide quantitative evidence of neuron loss.

Stereological techniques also have statistical approaches. Using these approaches, the efficiency of work can be adjusted. Each stereological study should be planned according to the tissue examined and the parameters to be analyzed, and a pilot study can be used to determine the statistical validity of the stereological analysis. According to the efficiency principle of stereology, reaching the degree closest to reality within optimum time and workload is essential.

Strategies for Designing High-Quality MCQs

In healthcare education, the art of formulating effective multiple-choice questions (MCQs) is a pivotal element in assessing learners' knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. However, striking the exact balance between assessment accuracy and educational value can be a formidable challenge. The lecture provides healthcare educators, faculty, and curriculum designers with insights into MCQ design principles and practices. Participants will embark on a journey through the intricacies of building elements, formulating answer choice, and the art of creating sensible distractions. The lecture will focus on aligning MCQs with specific learning goals and competencies and promoting assessments that truthfully reflect the educational journey of healthcare students and professionals. Furthermore, the lecture will delve into strategies to enhance the reliability and validity of healthcare assessments, ultimately contributing to improving educational outcomes and developing competent healthcare practitioners.

in Healthcare Education

Item banks facilitate the ongoing review and evaluation of questions for quality, validity, reliability, and fairness. This ensures that MCQs meet established assessment standards and align with the intended learning. It also enables the identification and removal of poorly performing or outdated questions.

In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, the strategies discussed in this lecture serve as a catalyst for continuous improvement in healthcare education, enabling the development of highly skilled and competent healthcare professionals who can meet the complex demands of the field.
