The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is offered at RAK College of Medical Sciences (RAKCOMS). It is a six-year program comprising of 2 years of pre-medical and 4 years of preclinical (integrated modular applied basic sciences) and clinical clerkship courses. The Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree is offered at the end of 6 years of MD program with a total of 224 credits. Apart from the courses offered in the Basic Medical Sciences and Preclinical Sciences, it also covers clinical theory and clerkship rotations in Internal Medicine and allied subjects, General Surgery and allied subjects, Pediatrics and Neonatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Community Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, ENT, Ophthalmology and electives. The students will undergo clinical training in various ministry hospitals & health centers along with research opportunities throughout the program.

After passing the final MD examination and graduating, students can undergo rotational Internship in the approved hospitals of the country of their choice for a period of twelve months. The College will facilitate the approval of internship from the Emirates Health Services (EHS), UAE. For internship opportunities in hospitals under Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and Department of Health (DOH) Abu Dhabi, the students can apply directly to these authorities.

Doctor of Medicine (MD) Goals & Program Outcomes

Doctor of Medicine (MD) program comprises of 2 years of pre-medical and 4 years of preclinical (integrated modular applied basic sciences) and clinical clerkship courses.

Note: The legacy MBBS program is retired; the MD program is canonical. MBBS goals and outcomes are consolidated here under the MD program.

1. The Goals

The curriculum has been developed to provide learning opportunities enabling medical students to acquire fundamental knowledge, develop basic skills and appreciate principles relevant to health care in the context of the community. The six-year curriculum has been designed to achieve the following goals:

General Education Course Description

Course Prerequisite: None

Course Summary: This course covers the basic skills of the English language required for students of Medicine. This course includes the use of professional English in medicine including medical terminology with the correct pronunciation. It hones the students’ English language skills to read, write, listen and speak effectively in medical contexts.

Course Prerequisite: ENG 103

Course Summary: Health Sciences Communication in English covers the soft skills required for a medical professional to interact with patients and their families. At every level, it emphasizes Empathy, Active Listening, Critical Thinking, and problem-solving skills while interacting with patients, their families as well as their colleagues. Students are exposed to techniques of communicating in different contexts. Public Speaking skills including conference presentations are practiced.

Course Summary: The Computer Skills course is designed to provide students with basic Information Technology (IT) to equip them with the essential skills required as healthcare professionals. This course covers system security, communications, and a variety of computer applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The students are exposed to input-output devices, which will be helpful in their future careers. The course also includes discussions on the impact of information technology on various aspects of healthcare.

Course Summary: Psychology is the study of human behavior and consists of various psychological principles and theories that enhance one’s understanding of human thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This course includes psychological principles such as learning, behavior, emotions, and personality development that will aid in the comprehensive management of patients required of medical professionals. It also includes the practical skills of counseling and motivational interviewing that are integral components of good medical practice.

Course Summary: This course adopts a variety of language situations to assimilate everyday life issues for students of medical and health sciences. Different issues related to daily life such as greetings and introductions are covered through oral dialogues. The course gives priority to pronunciation and correct articulation while speaking in Arabic.

Course Summary: Islamic Culture and Medicine course introduces the concept of medicine in Islamic belief. The course covers the pillars of the Islamic faith, the ethical and moral issues, rights and duties, and allowance and forbiddance of certain surgeries and procedures related to medicine under Islamic belief.

Course Summary: The Emirates Society course delivered to (first year-semester one) MD Students seeks to merge national belonging and identity and appreciate the national achievements of the United Arab Emirates. The course focuses on introducing students to the main social features of the Emirati community and its core values and heritage, as well as the history and geography of the country. It discusses the internal and foreign policy, social development, and services provided by the State, including the empowerment of women and their role in society. The course also aims to shed light on UAE’s role in building an Emirati knowledgeable society, encouraging multiculturalism, and developing solid economic and technological infrastructure, as well as positioning UAE at a globally competitive level. The course also includes the future visions and challenges towards developing strategic plans as it will discuss Federal Government Vision and Abu Dhabi’s Vision 2030 and the different issues related to future development plans and the expected challenges. Learning about this course is facilitating Knowledge through several interactive assessment methods such as lecture sessions, discussions, group discussions, self-directed learning, and demonstrations.

Course Summary: The research process is the cornerstone for informed and effective decision-making to improve health and the effectiveness of their health systems. The course is emphasizing the understanding of the main elements of the scientific research process. It will encourage students to understand how to conduct the research in their practice; seek the answers to the questions in the current practice in their field as well as base their professional practice on emerging evidence from research. Learning is facilitated through interactive lecture sessions, group discussions, self-directed learning, and demonstrations. The course has been designed to provide the basic tools required to write a successful proposal and to become familiarized with the research methodology. The latter includes the use of qualitative and quantitative methods, data collection, presentation, and descriptive analysis, and the final report of a research proposal, manuscript, grant, or abstract.

Course Summary: Medical Innovation and Entrepreneurship is a two-credit course offered in the second semester of the second year of the Medical program. The goal of the course focuses on assisting the students to acquire a practical approach to how to transform a novel idea into a successful commercial product and application of knowledge to real-life organizational issues faced by those establishing and managing innovation-driven organizations. The course also encourages students to understand how to evaluate the opportunities to design new medical products and organizations that solve problems or make patients’ lives better; seek the knowledge of building teams to manage and launch new ventures. Learning is facilitated through interactive lecture sessions, group discussions, and self-directed learning.

Pre-Medical Sciences (I & II Year — Semester I to IV)

This educational track that undergraduates pursue, involves activities that prepare a student for preclinical and clinical sciences in the medical school such as pre-medical science coursework, volunteer activities, clinical skills, research and the application process. It has a total of 72 credits and includes English, Health Sciences Communication in Arabic, Emirates Society, Cell Biology, Human Biology-I, II, Research Methodology-I,II, Health Sciences Communication in English, Islamic Culture in Medicine, Health and Nutrition, infection control, Information Technology and Innovation, Clinical Skills-I, Medical genetics, Biostatistics, Bioethics and Professionalism, Psychology & Behavioral Sciences, Career and Professional Development and Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Year I

Course Description: This course is designed to provide basic knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry to the first year premedical students. This course explains the concepts and functions of basic tissues of human body, biomolecules and human physiology. These foundation principles are to support the year 1 premedical students to better understand the human body in health and disease and prepare the students for system-based learning of medicine in subsequent years.

Course Description: This course provides first-year medical students with basic knowledge of the principles of cell biology required for the practice of medicine. These foundation principles of cell biology are to support the study of the human body in health and disease and prepare the students for system-based learning of medicine in subsequent modules. The primary advantage of Cell Biology curriculum is that it focuses on the basic knowledge that a physician will use "to diagnose and treat diseases, with the understanding of the internal organization of the eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell, membrane function, cell-cell signalling. The course will also cover important cellular processes such as cell cycle regulation, and apoptosis and attempt to relate defects in these various cellular processes to human diseases to help gain a better understanding of what happens when cells don’t work as they should.

Course Description: The research process is the cornerstone for informed and effective decision-making to improve health and the effectiveness of their health systems. The course is emphasizing on the understanding of the main elements of the scientific research process. Course Description: This course provides first-year medical students with the basic principles and practice of infection prevention and control (IPC). IPC is a main challenge for health care systems around the world and there is a significant prospect to decrease unnecessary morbidity and mortality through developments in IPC. Health care-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can be significantly reduced through effective IPC. The course will help prepare students as future medical graduates to summarize the most prevalent risk factors for HAIs & recognize appropriate situations where it is necessary to apply these measures. Further, the course will help the students to apply all IPC measures in their daily activities and their households.

Year II

Course Description: This course provides second-year medical students with basic knowledge of the principles underlying the practice of medicine. These foundation principles are to support the study of the human body in health and disease and prepare the students for system-based learning of medicine in subsequent modules. The basic principles & basic concepts of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, Pathology and Pharmacology related to humans will be covered in this module.

Course Description: Learning of clinical skills during preclinical year empowers the students to acquire the skills that facilitates them to communicate and interact well with patients and perform physical examination on them. They get the early exposure with these core and important professional skills in a simulated environment that make them confident and comfortable while dealing with real patients during clinical years.

Course Description: This course provides premedical students with basic principles of research methodology relevant to the practice of medicine and research. Research methodology deals with application of scientific principles to the design and analysis of experimental studies. This course covers the skills required for writing a research project. Topics covered include basics of qualitative an quantitative research designs; PICO model, protocol writing, ethics guidelines manuscript writing and bibliography tools.

Course Description: This course provides second-year medical students with basic knowledge of the principles of medical genetics required for the practice of medicine. These principles of medical genetics are to support the study of the human body in health and disease and prepare the students for system-based learning of medicine in subsequent modules. This course will also teach concepts and experimental methodologies of molecular and medical genetics. This course will cover perspectives in medical genetics, human genome, nucleic acid structure and function, chromosomes, evolution of classical and non-classical patterns of inheritance, molecular genetic pathology, biochemical genetics, epigenetics, pharmacogenomics and laboratory methods for genetic analysis, genetic screening, genetic counselling and molecular genetic research approaches to the study of human genetic disease using humans and model organisms.

Course Description: This course provides second-year medical students with basic principles of biostatistics relevant to the practice of medicine and medical research. Biostatistics deals with application of statistical principles to the design and analysis of biological studies. This course covers the theory, methods, and specific software, used in contemporary biostatistics. Topics covered include basics of data types, descriptive and analytical measures; hypothesis testing; t test; chi square test; analysis of variance (ANOVA), power analysis, linear regression, multivariate statistics. Thrust area includes using the GraphPad and SPSS for statistical analysis.

Course Description: The biomedical ethics & professionalism course introduces students to the ethical dimensions of clinical medicine and the related sciences. It offers them basic language and methodology to critically examine these dimensions. The course format integrates lecture and active case discussion to provide both the necessary philosophical grounding and the real-world skills sought by students. This course will provide an introduction to basic ethical theory and various approaches to clinical ethical decision-making. Students will also be engaged in particular ethical issues in research. This course carries 3 credits, of which 2 are for theory and 1 is for the applied session. The course duration is 15 weeks.

Course Description: This course introduces the basic concepts of nutrition and build concepts for subsequent years of study. This course will cover various Biochemical aspects of vitamins and minerals, functions, dietary requirements, and importance to the body. It also highlights importance of basal metabolic rate, dietary fiber, and pharmacological aspects of nutrition with over view of pathological aspects of important diseases. It lays foundation aspects of knowledge of nutrition which is vital for the prevention, management, and treatment of many diseases. The course will be completed in 15 weeks and will be assessed by In-course assessment (ICA) and end semester examinations.

Course Description: In a complex and competitive modern world, there is a growing need for the development of soft-skills to enhance one’s performance in personal and professional life. In addition, prospective employers require students to have attended career and professional development sessions during the course of their study program. This course will help develop soft-skills of medical students and includes the topics of stress and anxiety management, study skills, overcoming procrastination, and dealing with peer pressure. These soft skills will enhance students’ performance in their future career as well as in their personal life. This course will equip medical and health science students with soft skills through presentations, activities, and role-playing, to enhance their performance as students and as professionals in their future careers. The course enhances the self-care of medical and health science students and thus enables them to provide effective medical and healthcare at the workplace.

Pre-clinical and Clinical Sciences (III to VI Year - Semester V to XII)

The courses offered in preclinical years include Musculoskeletal module, Cardio vascular System Module, Clinical Skills –II, Clinical Decision Making-I, Genitourinary System Module, Gastro intestinal system Module, Endocrine Module and Respiratory System Module and Neurology & Behavioral Sciences Module, while clinical sciences covers clinical theory and clerkship rotations in Internal Medicine and allied subjects, General Surgery and allied subjects, Pediatrics and Neonatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Community Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, ENT , Ophthalmology and electives.

Goal

Students will learn and acquire an integrated knowledge of organ evolution, structure and functions and the regulatory mechanism of the human body in the management of health and disease.

Modules (Year III, IV)

Integrated Teaching is made up of ‘Modules’. A Module is the smallest unit of curriculum. Each module is based upon organ-system/s of the body and/or processes. In each module, the basic and clinical sciences will be taught in an integrated manner.

The third year courses consist of five modules and clinical skills-II

The fourth year courses consist of two modules and clinical decision-making course. However, the clinical clerkship rotations also commence from 4th year MD and run until 6th year MD program.

Clinical Curriculum

The clinical component of the six year MD program is imparting to each medical student graduate with the fundamental patient centered knowledge and skills important in health and disease as the basis of safe and effective patient care. Gap between the basic sciences and clinical medicine is bridged by providing the students with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate patients while at the same time, emphasizing the importance and integration of basic sciences, behavioral medicine, ethics, and professionalism. The clinical phase of three years integrated curriculum prepares the medical student for effective delivery of health care to individual and society in practice of medicine.

The focus of this clinical phase through systems is on abnormal structure and function. Students rotate through a series of clinical clerkships which provide opportunities for the study of patients presenting with abnormal structure and function of the body systems. Clinical teaching complements actual clinical experience in patients. The epidemiology, etiology, and natural history of disease processes are investigated in greater depth than in preclinical phase. The principles of therapeutics are included in a consideration of the medical management of specific disease processes. The ethical implications of medical intervention are considered and the psychological and social consequences both of disease and medical intervention are reviewed.

As a student progresses though the clinical curriculum of the medical school, his/her competencies and attainment of these educational outcomes are periodically reviewed as they provide valuable guide to the organization of the knowledge, skills and attitudes learnt during this phase of their professional growth.

To ensure equivalent learning experiences for all medical students, a standardized curriculum is employed. This includes:

  1. A common list of learning outcomes, to be met with course wise and system wise (where ever applicable), didactic lectures and clinical clerkship program,
  2. Recommended / reference text books.
  3. A series of team based learning and seminars leading to self-directed learning

After successful completion of the six year MD program, the students are required to undergo a one year rotational internship in the assigned Federal Hospital if they want to practice medicine in UAE. Internship is a phase of training wherein a graduate is expected to conduct actual practice of medical and health care and acquire clinical skills under supervision, so as to enable him/her to function independently.

Clinical Clerkship

The clinical phase of the curriculum includes fourteen required clerkships (Community medicine, Ophthalmology, Oto-rhino-laryngology, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Orthopedics, Dermatology, Radio-diagnosis, Anesthesia & critical care, Emergency Medicine and Electives.

During this period the students are exposed to all the major specialties of medicine and many sub specialties in hospital setting. As they rotate through various departments, they work to develop relationships with faculty and other physicians, seek out mentors who can help out guide their future career choices. They will be evaluated by clerkship assessments including evaluations from their attending physicians and residents and by other appropriate methods. All these evaluation will become part of their continuous assessment.

YEAR III Module Description

Course Description:

This module consists of the study of musculoskeletal & Integumentary systems during health and disease conditions. The teaching will be for 8 weeks duration. The methodology adopted for this module apart from didactic lectures will be case based learning, and team based learning. The laboratory exercises include demonstration of prosected/dissected cadaveric specimens from upper limb regions, lower limb regions and neck triangles. The contents of the module include; normal anatomy, physiology and biochemistry & pathological conditions of muscles, bones, joints, and skin and breast tissue. The microbiological conditions associated with the systems are also taught. The module will be covering the study of drugs involved in various abnormal conditions of the musculoskeletal & Integumentary systems. The necessary Imaging studies and forensic medicine topics are also included.

Course Description:

The Cardiovascular module commences with an account of the anatomy of heart with regard to its development, gross features, nerve supply, blood supply and surface anatomy. Subsequently normal physiology of cardiac output, venous return, blood pressure and their regulation; the physiological basis for hemodynamics and cardiac cycle; the regulation of the coronary circulation and the role of microcirculation and physiological basis of edema; electrophysiology of the heart, physiological basis for normal and abnormal ECG should be studied in appropriate weeks. They get the early exposure with these core and important professional skills in a simulated environment that make them confident and comfortable while dealing with real patients during clinical years.

The respiratory module covers the various parts and functions of the respiratory tract, common respiratory infections, their diagnosis, pathogenesis, clinical features, complications of common respiratory disorders, and the therapeutic management including their mechanism of action. The module is divided into five weeks starting with the basics of the respiratory tract in the first week and progressing to the pathological and clinical aspects with relevance to the respiratory system. Topics will be covered using various learning methodologies like lectures, team-based learning (TBL), case-based learning (CBL), and practical sessions. This module carries 5 credits, of which 2 are for theory and 3 are for applied sessions. The module will be completed in five weeks.

Course Description:

This module builds upon an understanding of the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract, and enables students to integrate basic science and clinical concepts related to this system, with emphasis on the pathophysiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of the most common gastrointestinal diseases. Appropriate examples of medical imaging and diagnostic techniques are also introduced. In addition, this module revisits the basic aspects of nutrition and discusses the pathophysiology of nutritional inadequacies or excesses, their clinical manifestations, prevention and treatment.

The genitourinary module provides a comprehensive knowledge of the structure, functions and biochemical aspects of the excretory, male and female reproductive systems to the third-year medical students. It will also discuss the most common categories of disease processes (congenital, inflammatory, neoplastic, vascular, metabolic and immune-mediated) involving the genitourinary system and their management. The course will be delivered through didactic lectures, case based learning, seminars, team based learning and practical’s in labs.

YEAR IV

Course Description:

The Endocrine module aims to provide the student with an introduction to the role of the endocrine system in regulating the activities of the major organ systems and endocrine disorders. It includes basic concepts in endocrinology and metabolism, general physiological concepts including the structure and mechanism of action of hormones, feedback control of endocrine function, pathogenesis and pharmacology of the drugs used in common endocrine disorders. This module will enable the students to understand the clinical problems associated with endocrine diseases and also the basis for management. The module utilizes many teaching and learning techniques including lectures, case based learning (CBL), team based learning (TBL) and practical sessions. Appropriate clinical skills are incorporated to coincide with the module for better understanding and application. The module will be completed in four weeks and the end module examination (EME) in the 5th week.

Course Description:

This module builds upon an understanding of the structure and function of the Central nervous system, and enables students to integrate basic science and clinical concepts related to this system. Each of the basic science topics is incorporated into an integrated body of knowledge covering neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurological correlation, neuropharmacology, neuropathology, microbiology, human behavior, biochemistry and the medico-legal aspects with emphasis on the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of the most common CNS disorders. Appropriate examples of medical imaging and diagnostic techniques are also introduced. In addition, this module covers the pathophysiology of the special senses of vision, audition, olfaction and gustation.

The course will prepare the students to function as a community and first level primary care physicians with an insight into the health of the people, the health problems of the people with an emphasis is on health promotion and disease prevention. Due emphasis will be made on fundamentals of epidemiology, epidemiological methods, to understand disease causation and the strategies for prevention and control.

Course Description:

Otorhinolaryngology is a surgical subspecialty within medicine that deals with conditions of the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) and related structures of the head and neck. Patients seek treatment from an otorhinolaryngologist for diseases of the ear, nose, throat, base of the skull, and for the surgical management of cancers and benign tumors of the head and neck.

The goal in the core otorhinolaryngology curriculum is to provide a solid foundation in otorhinolaryngology to each medical student. The knowledge gained during this course will allow the students to acquire the adequate knowledge and skills for optimally dealing with common disorders and emergencies and principles of rehabilitation of the different diseases of ear, nose and throat in general practice.

Course Description:

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the eye and visual system. The eye, its surrounding structures and the visual system can be affected by a number of clinical conditions. Ophthalmology involves diagnosis and therapy of such conditions, along with microsurgery. Study of ophthalmology will help students to acquire knowledge, skills and competencies required as primary care physician in patients’ care suffering from ophthalmic disorders. The knowledge gained during this course will enable the students to take an appropriate ophthalmic history, and perform an accurate primary care ophthalmic examination with an ability to diagnose and appropriately manage acute and common ophthalmic conditions, as well as to properly manage other ocular diseases. The students will be able to develop a sense of the importance of visual impairment and disability. They will also be able to assist the implementation of national programs for the prevention of blindness and rehabilitation of the visually impaired.

Course Description:

The Internal Medicine course deals with introduction to clinical presentations of various medical disorders. In this clerkship year, basic facts about common disorders in various systems of cardiology, infections, neurology, gastroenterology & endocrine systems are covered including diagnosis of common clinical disorders and their effective management including drug therapeutics. The basics of radiological principles, modes of imaging and their clinical applications, interpretation of various common imaging tools such as x-rays, ultrasound, CT and MRI scans related to common clinical disorders as well as basics in dermatological pathology, pharmacology, common skin disorders such as infections, various dermatitis, auto immune skin diseases, and common skin malignancies such as squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, are also covered. Nutritional disorders of skin and evaluation management of all common skin diseases are given special emphasis.

General surgery, as a specialty, deals with a wide spectrum of diseases affecting the human body, which requires an intervention in majority of cases. This undergraduate course per se deals with the knowledge of human body, pathophysiology of diseases, diagnosing surgical diseases and the basic surgical skills required to practice as a primary care physician in the community. Being a major undergraduate course, it has been divided and spread over 3 Years (MD Year 4, 5 & 6) of the total 6-year MD program. Year 4 focuses on Basics in Surgery and GI system while Year 5 & 6 introduces Surgical Sub-specialties. Anesthesia & ICU is also included in Year 6 training. The specific learning outcomes are separate for each year. The year 4 course introduces students to the basic surgical concepts of wound healing, wound infections, shock & hemorrhage, i.v. fluids and peri-operative care of surgical patients. This forms the foundation of surgical teaching. These concepts are further reinforced when various gastrointestinal disorders, breast diseases and common skin diseases are introduced. The clinical clerkship in the hospitals provides the most vital learning resource in the form of patients for surgical care. During this clerkship, students attend General Surgery department and learn and apply the 4 main domains of clinical training: Communication skills, Physical examination skills, Procedural skills and Interpretation & clinical reasoning skills. The Skills lab is used to train students on manikins before they can assist/perform a skill on real patients (under supervision).

Orthopedics is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. Study of orthopedics will help students to acquire knowledge, skills and competencies required as primary care physician in patients’ care suffering from orthopedic trauma, bone and joints infection, metabolic bone diseases, joint disorders, tumors, skeletal anomalies and regional orthopedic disorders.

Course Description:

The term "clinical decision making" is generally used to describe a systematic way to study and analyze data and clinical algorithms to decide on a best course of action in practice. The goal of this course is to develop an effective practitioner, making clinical decisions using systematic proactive approaches by integrating experience, awareness, knowledge, information gathering, using appropriate assessment tools and evidence-based practice to help guide in dealing with the uncertainties of healthcare decisions as well as to develop an attitude of shared decision making with patients and to foster and promote research in medical decision making. The content of the course is shared by 5 specialties i.e. Internal Medicine, General Surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology.

YEAR V

Course Description:

In this clerkship year, etiology, signs, symptoms, clinical features and management of cardio-vascular diseases, renal, hematological and respiratory disorders are the main focus. Here the students will learn and apply the 4 main domains of clinical training: Communication skills, Physical examination skills, Procedural skills and Interpretation & clinical reasoning skills.

The year 5 course exposes the students to the subspecialties of surgery; Urology and Neurosurgery. Emphasis is on the basic principles involved in the management of common Urological and Neurosurgical disorders. General surgical topics like hernias and hepato-pancreatico-biliary surgery is also part of the course. During year 5 clerkship, students attend Urology, Neurosurgery & General Surgery department and learn and apply the 4 main domains of clinical training: Communication skills, Physical examination skills, Procedural skills and Interpretation & clinical reasoning skills. Course Description:

The goal of this course is to expand students' basic science knowledge to provide an introduction to those aspects of obstetrics and gynecology and women's health care that are essential to all physicians. It will enable them to provide primary health care to all female patients in a pregnant and non-pregnant state as well as help them to make appropriate and timely referrals.

It includes reproductive organs, physiology of reproduction, physiology of pregnancy and antenatal care, miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy, physiology of labor, Rh negative mother, post-dated pregnancy, preterm labor, medical disorders complicating pregnancy (Diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, thyroid disease),Puberty, normal and abnormal sexual development, endometriosis, sexually transmitted diseases and contraception The training in Obstetrics and gynecology will be divided between clinical exposure of five weeks of clinical clerkship and experience (in the outpatient department, operating room, labor room and wards), didactic sessions covering core subjects and skill sessions (to simulate and practice, interpretation and psychomotor skills). It will enable the students to understand the common diseases and health concerns of the female population. Lectures and active learning sessions encompassing these core subjects have been chosen to meet this broad clinical goal.

Course Description:

This course in pediatrics will enable the students to acquire the basic knowledge of normal and abnormal growth and development (physical, physiologic, psychosocial), and its clinical application from birth through adolescence, and to provide basic health care for individuals in the Pediatric age group (neonates, infants, children and adolescents).The students will be able to comprehend the clinico-pathological basis of nutritional disorders as well as vitamin and mineral deficiency states, explain the pathophysiologic basis of fluid therapy, electrolyte balance and acid-base disorders as well as understand the principles of use of accines, demonstrate knowledge of common infectious diseases and application of IMCI chart. They shall be able to explain the pathophysiological basis of genetic, immunologic and psychosocial issues in children and demonstrate knowledge of common genetic, immunologic and psychosocial disorders.

The clinical clerkship in pediatrics is for five weeks in fifth year of MD course. This will provide students with an appropriate background covering the common and important Pediatric diseases including emergencies and enable the development and application of appropriate professional attitudes, communication and problem solving skills.

Course Description:

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. Mental health affects the individual's ability to function, to be productive, to establish and maintain positive relationships, and to experience a state of well-being. As Socrates said “It is impossible for the part to be well, if the whole is not well”.

Study of Psychiatry will help medical students to acquire knowledge, skills and competencies required as primary care physician in identifying common mental health problems independently or as part of other physical illnesses for initial management and appropriate referral. Besides this, all medical practitioners need skills in communication and forming empathy and the ability to counsel that are learnt in psychiatry.

The principle objective of Psychiatry teaching for medical undergraduates is for students to be able to take a comprehensive psychiatric history and mental state examination, acquire a systematic approach for making diagnosis using information from the clinical assessment and justify their preferred and differential diagnoses. It will also help to indicate, in broad terms, how to manage and treat a person with a psychiatric disorder paying attention to the biological, psychological and social aspects of treatment and tailoring their recommendations in the light of the information they have obtained for delivering best practices.

Course Description:

The main goal of the course is to provide students with an insight into the organization, delivery of health care services in the community especially at Primary health care. It will provide students with an insight into the different national health problems such as communicable and non-communicable diseases with a special emphasis on lifestyle related diseases, nutritional problems, their epidemiological features, prevention and control. Due emphasis is given to maternal and child health, occupational health, environment and health.

The goal of the community medicine clinical clerkship is to expose students to an intense clinical experience at the first level of care. This will enable students to care for patients located in rural and urban areas and those who are medically underserved both in outpatient and inpatient settings. Multiple opportunities are provided to the students for improving their competency and especially the skills of caring and comforting patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds in community, educate them on matters related to health.

Course Description:

This course in Infection Control will enable the students to acquire the basic knowledge about infections and their management. It introduces learners to the basic principles of appropriate antibiotic use, demonstrate how to apply these principles to the management of common infections, and outline how to develop and maintain an antimicrobial stewardship program.

YEAR VI

Course Description:

In the final year of the clerkship, poisoning, occupational health hazards, geriatric problems and their management along with etiology, signs, symptoms, clinical features and management of various autoimmune, nutritional, neurological, endocrine and metabolic disorders and emergencies are covered.

Course Description:

The year 6 course aims to prepare the students for their internship. Basics learnt in the previous years are re-emphasized, and other subspecialties of surgery like Vascular, Pediatric and Cardiothoracic surgery are introduced. Management of trauma and Emergency general surgical patients is also covered here. Anesthesia and critical care form part of the year 6 course, and basics of various anesthesia techniques, monitoring during and after anesthesia are taught. Management of critically ill patients including ventilator and inotropic supports are touched upon. Students attend 2 clerkships in year 6 (one in General Surgery and another in Anesthesia), wherein the focus is more on peri-operative care of surgical patients.

The goal of this course is to expand students' basic knowledge of obstetrics and gynecology and women's health care. It will enable them to provide health care to all female patients in a pregnant and non-pregnant state, recognize complications, provide essential first aid in emergency as well as help them to make appropriate and timely referrals.

It includes malpresentations and positions, twins, fetal growth abnormalities, infertility, common gynaecological disorders, different types of benign and malignant lesions of uterus, cervix, ovary, vulva and vagina, diseases of the urinary system, Hysterectomy and other surgical procedures in the genital tract, menopause, ultrasound in obstetrics and common drugs in obstetrics and gynecology.

To be eligible for graduation, the student must satisfy each of the following requirements:

  • Must have satisfactorily full filled all the academic requirements including attendance.
  • Must have obtained pass grades in all courses of the program with minimum CGPA of 2.00.
  • At least 50% of total credits required for the program must have been earned at RAKMHSU.
  • The student becomes a degree candidate when the Dean, on the advice of Chairpersons, recommends him/her to the University Senate for conferring the appropriate degree.
  • Students must have met all financial obligations to the University within the time specified. The certificate for graduation and transcripts will be withheld if there are any dues to the university.

QualifiedA Minimum of 90% in any two science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Mathematics in grade 12. If any of the mentioned subjects are not completed in grade 12. A letter from the school is required for notifying the one of the missing subjects completed in grade 10/11 is equivalent to grade 12.

Additional Requirements

  • English Subject: If the English subject score is less than 80% in grade 12, applicants are required to pass a remedial course in the specified subject for the UAE Curriculum. For other curriculum, if the medium of instruction is English, a letter from the school is required.
  • Personal Interview: All applicants must pass a personal interview set by the college, in addition to other admission conditions set by the university.
  • High Priority for Admission: High priority will be given to students with a TOEFL score of >500 (paper-based) or >61 (internet-based) or an Academic IELTS score of >5 or an EMSAT English score of 1100 with a valid test date. Preference will also be given to students with high scores in Biology and Chemistry/Physics in grade 12.
  • Remedial: Applicants who do not meet the requirements for any of the science subjects, Mathematics, or English must successfully complete remedial courses in the respective subject during the first semester.
Admission Procedure for Doctor Of Medicine (MD)

a. The following steps will be followed for admissions to the Doctor Of Medicine (MD) program for Aug 2026 session:

1. From the online applications received, after evaluating the 12th grade marks as per the Admission requirement, students will be shortlisted based on the highly meritorious amongst the qualified candidates. A provisional offer letter will be issued to the student asking to remit the seat reservation fee to block the seat for the program. Once the student paid the seat reservation fee, based on the documents submission through online form, the student will required to do as per the additional recruitments

2. The Personal Interview which is a must for All the students, the interview will be conducted virtually through google meet or Zoom software. Admissions Committee consisting of Dean of RAK College of Medicine & a panel of one or two Senior Faculty and Manager – Admissions & Marketing.

3. Grade 12 results are declared for various Boards of study in UAE at different timings in 3 phases-starting end of May, mid of June and first week of July. Therefore, interviews will be conducted from June onwards every week until seats are full.

  • The admission will be based on merit and on the MOE Guidelines for admission.
  • Candidates who are selected for admission after the Personal Interview will receive the Provisional Offer letter by email from the University within 2 days with a timeline for acceptance and confirmation by payment of the balance fees. If the candidate is accepting the offer of admission, he/she must comply with all the requirements specified in the Provisional Offer Letter including submission of required documents and payment of fee on or before the stipulated date mentioned in the Provisional Offer Letter. If the candidate does not respond within the deadline mentioned, the provisional offer automatically expires and the seat is allotted to the next candidate in the waiting list.
  • On compliance of the above including payment of requisite fee, the candidate will receive a registered student ID number on email and due intimation from the University regarding further details on the Freshman Orientation Program.
  • Applicants should strictly adhere to the deadlines indicated for admission, submit online applications on time and upload important document copies mentioned such as grade sheets/transcripts and ensure application is fully completed before they click the submit button.
  • Once the seats are full, the remaining candidates who have qualified after personal interview will be waitlisted.
  • Waitlisted applicants and late applicants can be considered for admission if seats are still available for that program, within registration deadlines.
  • Admission of students are subject to the compliance of all requirements specified in the Provisional/Admission Offer Letter.
  • All the documents submitted online by the candidates will be verified with the originals submitted by the candidates during admission and duly returned after verification as per MOHESR Standards.
  • In case of non-compliance with any of the admission criteria/ false documentation submitted, the admission of the candidate will automatically stand cancelled.

The original documents to be submitted for verification by the candidate for verification are mentioned in the Provisional/Admissions offer.

Admission Requirements For Graduate-Entry 4-Years MD Program (for those who completed Bachelor degree)

(This track of admission depends on the vacancy available within the approved capacity of admission.)

  • The Applicant should possess a bachelor’s degree (Biomedical / Health / Life Sciences or equivalent) from an accredited college by MOHESR or other equivalent body or university with:
  • Equivalency Certificate of the Baccalaureate degree from the Ministry of Education, UAE or Copy of WES Grading Evaluation Score Sheet.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale or equivalent on non-GPA grading systems
  • Core CGPA (Science courses) at least 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale or equivalent on non-GPA grading systems.

The Applicant must have proficiency in spoken and written English. The Applicant can fulfil the English proficiency requirement via the EmSAT – English or TOEFL paper based or TOEFL – IBT(internet based test) or Academic IELTS.

Please note that the validity of TOEFL paper based test, TOEFL - IBT(Internet based test), Academic IELTS is two years only and for EMSAT English score is 18 months and these scores should be valid at the time of Admission process to join the above program.

  • EmSAT English : Minimum Score of 1400 or higher
  • TOEFL - IBT(Internet Based test) : Minimum Score of 79 or higher
  • TOEFL - Paper based test - Minimum Score of 550 or higher
  • Academic IELTS: Minimum Overall score 6 or higher. Ref: 4.

All Applicants shall be subjected to an interview by the Special Admissions Committee to evaluate for cognitive and non-cognitive traits demonstrating their aptitude for the chosen area of study.

Applicants are required to apply on the admission portal with resume and a personal statement.

The decision of the Admission Committee shall be final and binding.

Assessment Methodologies

MBBS program years I to V

Pre-Clerkship Courses of MBBS Years I & II

The curriculum for the Pre-Clerkship courses of first two years of MBBS program is an Integrated Modular Curriculum. The basic sciences courses are integrated into various modules and each module is considered equivalent to a course with credits

  • Year 1 consists of 4 modules.
  • Year 2 consists of 4 modules.

There is both Continuous Assessment and Comprehensive Examinations for each module. Both components are applied for assessment of theory and practical learning.

Continuous assessment is performed throughout the academic year and the Comprehensive Examination is conducted at the end of the academic year. Combination of the grades achieved by the students in these components gives the final grade that the students achieve at the end of each year. Progression along the module is decided at the end of each academic year.

Continuous assessment contributes 60% and Comprehensive Examination contributes 40% towards the final grades (Both for theory and practical) and these components have to be passed together.  In case of failure in comprehensive examination, both theory and practical exams have to be repeated in repeat examination.

Continuous assessment exams are conducted by the basic sciences departments of RAKCOMS.

Theory

An average of the grades obtained in these two Continuous Assessment Test will be calculated and this will contribute 30% to the total theory continuous assessment.

Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE)

There will be one OSPE at the end of each module. It will contribute 30% to the total continuous assessment.

Team Based Learing (TBL)

TBL will be scheduled at frequent intervals throughout the module.

Each TBL consists of Individual readiness assurance test (I – RAT) and Team readiness assurance test (T- RAT).

Weightage for I – RAT is 70% and T- RAT is 30%, to calculate the final grade achieved by each student for a particular TBL Average of all TBL’s conducted in each module is taken and they will contribute 25% to the total continuous assessment.

Assignments

One integrated assignment per semester is given and the scores are equally distributed to both modules in the semester. It will contribute 15% to the total continuous assessment

Clinical Skills

Continuous assessment in clinical skills is of Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and will be conducted one for each semester. There is no comprehensive examination. However, OSCE will be assessed and graded like in any other course but the grade points will not be included in the GPA of the semester and overall CGPA


For Clerkship courses of MBBS Years III to V

Assessment in the clinical years (Years 3, 4 and 5) of the MBBS program while retaining the general principles of the assessment system of the University caters to the teaching and clinical rotations which form the basis of learning in these years.

There is both continuous assessment and Comprehensive Examinations. Each of these two components is applied to both theory and clinical.

Continuous assessment occurs throughout the academic year and the Comprehensive Examination is conducted at the end of the academic year. Combination of these components gives the grades the student achieves at the end of the year. Progression along the course is decided at the end of each academic year.

Continuous assessment and Comprehensive Examination will contribute 50% each to the final scores for theory/ clinical separately and these components have to be passed separately.  In case of failure in comprehensive exams, only the failed component has to be repeated in repeat examination.

  • There will be two theory examinations, at approximately 12 week intervals throughout the teaching period of the Academic Year. These will be in the same format as the Final examination. The dates shall be announced by the University.
  • The average scores of the two Continuous Assessment Test will contribute 70% to the total theory continuous assessment.
  • They shall comprise of multiple choice questions (MCQ) only. The number of questions will be related to the theory credit hours of the respective courses.
  • Continuous Assessments will be conducted on consecutive days without any gap between examinations for different courses.
  • There will be no theory classes during continuous assessment but clinical rotations will continue.
  • In each of the two Continuous Assessments, students will be examined on only part of the content of the course.
  • 1st Continuous Assessment – from beginning of year up to 1st assessment
  • 2nd Continuous Assessment – from 1st assessment up to 2nd assessment
  • The Deans will notify the students about the schedule of the Continuous Assessment – including the time and venue.
Team based learning (TBL)

TBL will be scheduled at frequent intervals throughout the course/module. Each TBL consists of an Individual readiness assurance test (I-RAT) and a Team readiness assurance test (T-RAT). Weightage for I-RAT is 40% and T-RAT is 60%, to calculate the final grade achieved by each student for a particular TBL. The average of all TBL’s conducted in each course/module is taken.

Continuous Assessment -Clinical

Continuous assessment in Clinical Clerkship Rotation will be carried out for each course. Where more than one clinical posting is scheduled under one course, assessment will be an overall one, but one which incorporates elements from each posting. Generally, in each course, assessment will be under the components mentioned below.

Mini CEX
  • Students are required to conduct a medical interview and perform physical examination in a hospital setting under direct supervision of the clinical examiner. Following this the examiners may question the student on their findings and conclusions.
  • Mini CEX will contribute 70% to the clinical component of continuous assessment
Log book, Case Review and Case presentations
  • Each of these components will contribute 10% to clinical continuous assessment, adding up to 30% of clinical continuous assessment
  • Requirement for each clinical clerkship may be different and will be informed to the students at the beginning of the rotation.
Completion of Clinical Clerkship

Completion of a clinical clerkship is based on satisfactory attendance, performance at Mini CEX and fulfillment of the Log Book, Case Review and Case Presentation requirements. If attendance is less than 90%, the student will not be eligible to appear for end rotation Mini CEX exam and comprehensive OCSE at the end year examination.

He has to undergo the remedial process and complete the remedial examination/any clinical evaluation, if any and appear for repeat I examinations.

Comprehensive Examination

The Comprehensive Examination will be the final examination for the course for the academic year. It will be conducted by the Office of Examinations.

Eligibility for the Comprehensive Examination:

To appear for the Comprehensive Examination a student must have both the following requirements

  • A minimum score of 40% in the continuous assessment in each component
  • A minimum attendance of 75% for the course (90% in clinical component) during the semester

The Comprehensive Examinations will include a theory component and a clinical component. The theory component will include MCQ  while the clinical component will be tested with objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).

The number of question items for theory will be based on the theory credit hours and will follow the same recommendations as for the first two years of the MBBS program

The number of question items for OSCE will be generally proportionate to the clinical credit hours for the course and will be decided by the Dean, RAKCOMS. OSCE for several courses may be conducted simultaneously in one circuit.

Pass grade in Clinical Courses

A student is expected to score a minimum of GPA 2.00 in each of the components separately in theory and Clinical (OSCE). A student who fails in theory or OSCE will appear for the respective component only for Repeat examination. Continuous assessment and comprehensive exams will have equal contributions (50% of each) towards the overall grading for the course.

Electives

The electives provide the students with an opportunity to explore subjects of particular interest to them in greater depth than the core course allows or to improve upon the areas of weakness by repeating a regular clerkship. This allows them additional time for personal growth as they fine tune their general medical skills and begin to explore the specialized areas that interest them. Students are encouraged to select an elective course of their own choice for a period of not less than two weeks during semester eight till twelve. The electives taken can be Home electives or Away from home electives. The Home electives are electives within the School of medicine, whereas Away from home electives can be an elective at another medical school or a clinical facility.

The Away from home electives are available from many schools and a variety of clinical facilities. The Office of the Dean and faculty members in the department will guide the students regarding electives.

RAKMHSU has got academic tie-up with Hashemite University of Jordan, Cyber Jaya University of Malaysia, Charles University of Czech Republic, International American University College of Medicine, West Indies, Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences (Deemed University) India, Dr. MGR Educational & Research Institute, India, Azerbaijan University, Azerbaijan Republic and AOC International and Academy for Advanced studies & Training International UK in the areas of clinical elective clerkship training, internship, continuing medical education and research. Similar tie-ups are being worked up with New York Medical College.

The cost of travelling and accommodation and personal expenses during any overseas training is to be borne by the students.

As with all other clerkships, failure to attend an approved elective will result in an unsatisfactory grade.

Internship

After graduation, one-year internship is mandatory if a student wants to practice Medicine in most of the countries in the world except the USA and Canada.

After passing the final MD examination and graduating, students can undergo rotational Internship in the approved hospitals of the country of their choice for a period of twelve months. If they desire to undergo internship in UAE, the University will facilitate the approval from the Emirates Health Services (EHS), UAE to complete their training in the Federal hospitals of UAE so as to get internship completion certificate from MOH and the office of the Dean.

The intern shall be entrusted with clinical responsibilities under the direct supervision of a senior faculty/ consultant. They shall not be working independently. Internship is a phase of training wherein a graduate is expected to conduct actual practice of medical and health care and acquire skills under supervision, so as to enable him/ her to function independently.

The Internship in UAE is arranged and supervised by the Ministry of Health and Prevention and the University facilitates its students in the submission of Internship Applications.
