Sustainability at RAK Medical & Health Sciences University (RAKMHSU)

The Sustainability strategy is aligned with the general RAKMHSU Strategy 2026–2030, which considers "Integrating Sustainability within its ecosystem" as one of the eight strategic priorities.

Strategic Goals

The achievement of the following goals guides the Integration of Sustainability:

  • 1 Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building to advance and integrate Sustainability within the University at governance, academic, operational, and community levels.
  • 2 Embedding sustainability principles into educational programmes, across curricula, research, and extracurricular activities.
  • 3 Reducing environmental impacts in all operations, adhering to the MOHAP Carbon Footprint initiative, and aligning with the Net Zero strategy 2050.
  • 4 Improving health outcomes while also addressing environmental concerns by engaging the local community in awareness campaigns and wellbeing events, as well as promoting engagement with local and national stakeholders in advancing policy reform for creating a sustainable healthcare system.
The UAE's healthcare sector is prioritizing sustainability through various initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving patient outcomes. The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has launched the "Carbon Footprint Analysis in UAE Hospitals" initiative, which measures carbon emissions in hospitals and aims to help facilities reduce their environmental impact. This initiative aligns with the UAE's Net Zero 2050 targets and emphasizes the importance of energy conservation, optimal resource utilization, and sustainable practices in healthcare.

The UAE's healthcare system is also investing in energy-efficient systems, digital health tools, and better waste management. Procurement policies are evolving to focus on suppliers that meet environmental and social standards. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure that healthcare facilities are designed, built, and managed in line with sustainability principles.

The UAE's commitment to sustainability is also reflected in its social impact initiatives, such as investing in community programs focused on health awareness, education, and inclusion. These programs aim to reach more than 219,000 people across the country, demonstrating the UAE's dedication to improving health outcomes while also addressing environmental concerns.
