Electives are an important part of medical training. The electives provide the students with an opportunity to explore clinical courses of particular interest to them in greater depth.
Though students have choice of pursuing Home Electives or Away from Home Electives, they should prefer for the latter, as it will expose them to new clinical setup, varied clinical cases in a new environment.
Students are encouraged to select electives in clinical department/s of their own choice for a period of not less than four weeks during the summer break after Semester VIII. Completion of at least 4 weeks of electives is mandatory to be eligible for the award of MBBS Degree Certificate.
The Home Electives are arranged by the Office of the Dean-RAKCOMS in coordination with the Training and Development Center [MOHAP].

- Winter break : in Semester VII [Dec/Jan] 2/3 weeks
- Summer break : after Semester VIII [Jul/Aug] 2/4 weeks
- Spring break : NOT available
Away from Home Electives [Student’s Choice]
Students are encouraged to apply and pursue Away from Home Electives at any government recognized hospital/health care facility of their choice. Students may approach the Office of the Dean-RAKCOMS for availing a bonafide electives letter, if necessary.

General requirements to pursue Electives
- Student should have good standing
- Student should have cleared all University fee dues, if any
- Student should have applied through the official electronic form sent by the Office of the Chief Academic Officer/Office of the Dean-RAKCOMS [wherever applicable]
- Student should have applied within the stipulated time
- Student should have submitted valid copy of prescribed documents, recent digital photo and payment etc within the stipulated time
- Approval from the respective hospital/Institute
- Students of final year MBBS are NOT eligible for applying
